COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

We want to build a more equitable world. Here’s how we’re doing it…

Advocacy

We helped designate the Tijuana River as one of America’s Top 10 Endangered Rivers of 2024.

The America’s Most Endangered Rivers® report is one of the best-known and longest-lived annual reports in the environmental movement. Each year since 1984, grassroots river conservationists have teamed up with American Rivers to use the report to save their local rivers, consistently scoring policy successes that benefit these rivers and the communities through which they flow.

Un Mar De Colores and Surfrider teamed up to designate the Tijuana River, which flows through the U.S., Mexico, and Kumeyaay Nation, as one of the most endangered rivers in the U.S. Every day, millions of gallons of untreated sewage, toxic chemicals, and trash flow through the Tijuana River Watershed and into our coastlines.

We are calling our community to raise their voices alongside us.

Sign the petition to demand the President and Congress to address this national emergency now.

#RepresentationMatters

#RepresentationMatters is our media and art campaign that highlights and provides visibility into an already existing and rich culture of people of color in the surfing community.

We believe art is activism. By collaborating with BIPOC artists, we encourage artistic expression that encourages unity, diversity, and lifts BIPOC voices and visions up. We want to amplify people of color and cultivate visibility into a vibrant and rich culture of art within the surf industry.

Our Art Scholarships provide opportunities for and empower BIPOC artists, surfers, and changemakers to share their work and give them a platform to create honestly and inspire their communities with their art as a catalyst and a medium for positive change

It’s important for children to see people who look like themselves and their families doing activities they wish to do so it feels possible for them to do the same.

Whether it be a media campaign, surf film, or mural, we’re here to support it.

Mural

Our most recent mural was created in collaboration with DJ Javier to increase BIPOC representation along Pacific Coast Highway. This mural was made possible by the State Conservancy’s Coastal Stories Grant and is proudly hosted at Just Peachy in Leucadia thanks to the Ambrosio Family.

Surfista Scholarships

Our Surfista Scholarship program is for BIPOC, underserved, and underrepresented kids, teens, and adults anywhere in the world who want to expand their opportunities in the surfing industry but might not have the access or resources to make that possible.

We want to bridge the socio-economic gap for skilled surfers to dive deeper into their surfing career and compete without having to worry about added expenses so they can focus on surfing and fulfill their dreams of competing in the big leagues.

Surfing should be for everyone and we want to make that a reality!

Our application is open to all ages, any surf (short-board, longboard, SUP) competition in the world

Our Application cycle is closed for 2023 and will open back up late spring of 2024.
