Connect.
We believe the ocean has the power to connect us all. Surfing reminds us of our relationship to nature and each other by opening our eyes to our place and role in our ecosystem.
The ocean does not discriminate, it welcomes all and provides a ‘sense of place’ no matter an individual’s circumstance or color. In the water we find a home and an opportunity to build community. That sense of belonging to something bigger has the power to inspire great things.
We are all interconnected and interdependent.
Protect.
As surfers, we have a responsibility to
protect where we play. Our organization
centers around the ocean and our diverse community; initiating conversations around intersectional environmentalism and modeling a connected future.
Intersectionality fully informs the work of Un Mar De Colores by encouraging nuanced conversations around inequity. Recognizing that conversations around environmentalism and climate justice aren’t holistic without looking through an intersectional lens.
Play.
We aim to inspire passion and purpose through play. Children find direction in the world through the things that bring them joy. Something as simple as catching a wave has the opportunity to teach a child their greatest life lessons.
Joy and meaningful play are integral elements
for childhood development and guidance in finding their direction and purpose in life, so we cultivate purpose through passion and play; providing the tools, education, and experience to build confidence and a lifelong passion for ocean stewardship.

OUR APPROACH
Start small,

One special day has the opportunity to change your life… but we believe in consistency in order to provide a true opportunity for change. That’s why we work with 15 students for a two year cycle. We believe this allows us to create long lasting relationships and sustainable changes in our students lives.
Mentorship
We all need someone to look up to. That’s why our familia is dedicated to individual 1:1 mentorship with our students.
Purpose driven play (+education)
Empowerment
We believe passion starts with play. Learning can be exciting, and a little curiosity goes a long way. We make the ocean our classroom as our lessons take our students through sensory, visual, and experiential approaches.
Sustainable changes made within marginalized communities have to include the voices and opinions of those members. We have an adaptive approach that allows for the families to utilize our program a launching pad that perpetuates their autonomy, self-sufficiency, and feeling of ownerships with their personal ocean related future.
